Start with a maker amount only when it is usable
Most product pages do not publish a measured dose, so the amount must come from you. OLAPLEX Nº.4 is the exception: its current page uses 2.5 mL as an average application basis. Treat that as a starting reference, not a promise that every person receives full coverage at 2.5 mL.
Do not create a default from conflicting copy. The current OLAPLEX Nº.4C page gives both 2.5 mL and 5 mL application figures. The Nº.5 application-count copy also conflicts with its package-volume arithmetic. Those products require reader input in the calculator.
Measure one real application
Use a small scale when the package and dose are both treated as weight, or a marked spoon, syringe, or container when both are volume. You can also weigh the package before and after the wash to estimate product removed. Keep net-weight ounces separate from fluid ounces; they are not interchangeable.
Pump counts are useful only after you measure the output of your own pump. Dispense several pumps into a suitable measuring container, divide by the pump count, and keep that value with the exact bottle. A pump from another package may deliver a different amount.
- Record the exact product and package size.
- Record the number and size of sections.
- Measure the total amount used, including any second application.
- Note whether coverage was complete and whether excess remained on your hands or in the section.
Adjust according to the stage
For cleanser, change wetting and scalp distribution before assuming you need a much larger dose. Some maker directions call for adding water, emulsifying in the hands, or repeating. Count both applications when measuring. For conditioner or a mask, section size and application area can matter more than a generic coin-size comparison.
For leave-in and styler, start with a repeatable amount and add only where the chosen coverage or hold is incomplete. If you change both leave-in and gel amounts in one wash, you will not know which change produced the result.
Use coverage and result as the test
Too little can show up as incomplete distribution in the areas you intended to cover. Too much may leave obvious excess, make rinsing impractical, or change the finish beyond your goal. Those are routine observations, not fixed porosity symptoms. Reduce or increase one product by a small measured amount at the next comparable wash.
Different zones may need different placement. Measure the total, but note whether more went to the scalp, lengths, ends, or outer canopy. This makes the next adjustment much more precise than doubling the whole-head dose.
Turn the dose into cost per wash
Keep package amount and dose in the same unit. Estimated uses equal package amount divided by amount used per wash. Estimated cost per wash equals purchase price divided by estimated uses. If a package is explicitly labeled in fluid ounces, you may convert to milliliters using 29.5735 mL per fl oz. Do not convert net-weight ounces to milliliters.
Monthly cost is the estimated cost per wash multiplied by washes per week, then by 52 and divided by 12. The result remains an estimate because dose and wash frequency can change. Save the inputs so comparisons use the same assumptions.
Compare products with honest unknowns
Do not compare bottle prices while assuming the same dose for every formula. Enter a measured dose for each product or leave the result unavailable. The comparison tool can preserve package units, directions, and formula facts beside your personal estimate. An unknown dose is more honest and useful than a universal amount invented for the page.
