Medium Porosity Hair: Signs and Routine Choices

Medium porosity describes hair that does not seem unusually slow to wet or quick to lose moisture. It is an everyday description, not a measured score. If your routine works, you do not need a new set of products for this label.

What medium porosity means

Porosity describes how a hair fibre takes up and releases water. Laboratory hydration and microscopy studies examine properties that a bathroom observation cannot measure directly. The everyday low, medium and high labels are a way to discuss behaviour, not a diagnosis or a universal scale.

Medium does not mean perfect hair. It also does not describe your curl pattern, density, strand width or scalp health. Those are different questions. There is no need to prove you belong in the middle before choosing shampoo and conditioner.

Look for a pattern, not a pass mark

Notice how comparable sections wet during washing, how conditioner distributes and rinses, and how your usual amount of styler feels after drying. Keep the section size and drying method similar when you compare washes.

Roots and ends may behave differently. Product residue, airflow and changes to your routine make a one-off observation hard to interpret. A floating or sinking strand does not settle the question.

Keep what is already working

Use your chosen shampoo, then a rinse-out conditioner or a mask according to its directions. Leave-in and styler are optional. A porosity label does not require extra layers, a protein treatment or heat.

If your hair feels coated, change one optional layer or its amount while keeping the rest familiar. If distribution is uneven, work by section using your conditioner’s directions. These are routine experiments, not treatments for a diagnosed condition.

Choose products by the job they do

Compare the washing step, application, rinse instruction and any contact time. Check the ingredient list on your package when a named ingredient matters. Its presence alone cannot predict how the whole formula will feel.

If your current shampoo and conditioner meet the job, keep them. You can compare alternatives without replacing your entire routine.

When the observation changes

Research has found hair-shaft changes after repeated cosmetic treatments. A change in how processed ends behave is a reason to consider their history, not proof that all your hair has changed category.

For ongoing scalp pain, sores, sudden shedding or marked breakage, seek professional advice. A porosity guide cannot identify the cause.

Questions before your next wash

What if I am still unsure what to change?

Keep the steps that work, change one choice at a time and follow your exact product’s directions. A guide cannot diagnose scalp or hair conditions.
